| SYMPTOM |
Tape Separation from Coated Abrasives
Delamination of Fiber from Film
![]()
| CAUSES & CORRECTIVE ACTION |
- Excess RPM at scuff head
- Improper scuff head selection. Corrective Action: Reduce RPM of scuff head & select a scuffing process that will allow for better heat dissipation, i.e. non-woven belt, sand blast, silicone carbide belt, unitized belt.
Tape Separation from Coated Abrasives
Check for inadequate scuff & evaluate scuffing station, in particular, depth of scuff, condition of scuff media, & angle of scuff head.
- Check scuff head alignment & adjust to allow for a consistent pattern along edge of belt. Width of scuff head should be consistent to width of tape
- check infeed angle of belt & make sure infeed angle compliments coated abrasive bias angle.
Torn Belt
Equipment problem. Examine machine for irregular surface at platen or other contact areas.
- Check for faulty platen for nicks or gouges.
- Excessive joint thickness. (Measure joint thickness & back scuff depth
- Replace, redress or balance faulty contact wheel.
Adequate Back Scuff
2 Stage: 1st Abrasive Belt. 2nd Wire Wheel. or 1st Non-woven abrasive belt 2nd abrasive belt #80 Silca. or Wire Wheel and last but not least Sand Blast
- Inadequate tensile strength.
- improper nesting/packaging of belts.
- grain impaction.
- Excessive machine tension on belt.
- Excessive backscuff causing severed reinforcement fibers in backing.
- Improper angle of scuff head.
- In feed angle of coated abrasive & scuff head should compliment one another.
Delamination of Fiber from Film
- Select different splicing tape
- Reduce machine RPM
- Select splicing tape with better heat resistance.
Voids in Glue Line
Look for sources of silicone or other contaminates in applicator or on press.
